The people of faith who became First Presbyterian Church of Perry organized on February 26, 1905. There were 15. By May of the following year, the small group (all of whom were involved in the lumber industry) had constructed a sanctuary in which to worship. That sanctuary was located on Main Street in Perry. The history of the first Presbyterian Church bears clear evidence of God’s continual working in our corporate life. As a church we have been richly blessed over the years. We look back with grateful hearts. But God is not through with us and so we look ahead in the knowledge that God calls us into his will. We pray that our response to God’s call will honor and glorify His name.

Join us tonight for Potluck Fellowship Supper @ 5:45 pm with Ash Wednesday Service to follow at 7:00 pm! Ash Wednesday begins the season of Lent. The day is so named because of the ancient practice of wearing ashes as a sign of humility and repentance, a practice employed by Christians to signify total dependence on God. In the Old Testament “dust” and “ashes” are used as metaphors to speak of the humble position of humankind when compared to the exalted position of God. (Gen 18:27; I Sam 2:8; Job 30:19; 42:6; Ps 113:7) During this penitential season, purple is the traditional color, although for Ash Wednesday either black or gray would be appropriate. Lent may have originated as a period of preparation for candidates for baptism, which would take place at Easter. Baptism was a way of acting out the Christian’s participation in the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. So the time preceding Easter was a time of discipline and instruction, modeled after the Lord’s forty days in the wilderness. Similarly, Lent came to be a time for reaffirmation of baptismal vows, and a time of restoring those who had fallen away from the church. So there was opportunity for penitence and discipline of prayer and fasting leading up to recommitment. For us, Lent is a season of reflection on our own deep needs for God’s redemption, as well as contemplation of the mystery of God’s salvation in Jesus Christ. Lent is not just a time to give up something, but principally to give ourselves up to God anew as disciples of Jesus Christ. Sundays are not counted in the forty days before Easter that comprise the season of Lent. The reason is that Sunday is always the Lord’s Day, the Day of Resurrection, a “little Easter”, and therefore a day of rejoicing, quite in contrast with the penitential mood of Lent. So while we reckon the Sundays in Lent, they are not of Lent.

Christ the King Sunday is the last Sunday of the “church year,” and therefore, the Sunday just before Advent when the cycle begins over again. The celebration of this day is a summary of the whole year. Christ is worshiped as sovereign ruler over all creation and all nations and peoples. His rule is one of peace and justice. He is the One who claims our highest loyalty. Since this is a festival of the Lord, the appropriate color is white.
